First of all, make sure to get into the line for passenger cars, you can skip all trucks. If you are directed to the truck line, try to explain you are a tourist to avoid a long wait.
On both border checkpoints, only the driver is allowed inside the vehicle. All passengers need to walk through the border control building.
When at the control points, hand over your passport, drivers license, car passport and the notary document you got from us. This document contains our permission for you to take the car out of the country.
You will have to pass a few booths, and maybe the officers want to check inside. If you have a roof top tent, they are extra curious about what that thing is, and it helps to have a photo ready to explain it’s a tent.
On the Armenian side, you will be directed to the customs booth to get a temporary import paper. Just show your documents again and they will make it. Make sure to keep this paper with you, you will need it when you return to Georgia.
After this – you are free to go. After the gate you will find several booths that sell insurance, and also SIM-cards (we recommend VivaCell/MTS). All insurance companies have very similar prices, it should cost around 8-15.000AMD (15-30€) depending on the amount of days, watch out for scams here.
